The theater Landshut on the banks of the Isar can look back on 170 years of history. In the years 1839/40 the brewery , mills and craft owners , construction, and theater entrepreneur Johann Baptist Bernlochner bought the property on the Isar and started on their own to build the Bernlochner City theater complex with hotel, restaurant, brewery and apartments. On 15.10.1841 the theater with the patriotic piece " Ludwig der Bayer " by Uhland is solemnly eröffnet.1871 goes , the building became the property of Wittmann brewery . 1933, the Landshut theater is mainly played by dramatic societies , only temporarily by its own force. This year there is also the Nazi organization subordinated to " strength through joy " .
Since the Bernlochner building suffered considerable damage during the war , the city theater was restored in 1947 . He then decides the Landshut town council , the theater has 365 seats on its own , first as pure theater to lead . Already in the following season , a musical theater ensemble is formed. In 1952, together with the cities of Passau and Straubing on the Association "South East Bavarian cities theater " , renamed the State Theatre of Lower Bavaria in 2008.
Under the directorship of Klaus Schlette (1970 to 1996) and numerous modifications to the building complex to be made , inter alia, created a sample stage and additional work spaces. His successor, John Riding Meier (1996 to 2002) opened New Year's Eve 1996 with the " studio in City Theatre " a second venue (80 seats).
